State police charged a Syracuse man with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance after a traffic stop on Route 490 in Victor. According to police, a children’s book bag in the trunk of the vehicle contained packaged heroin. Police also charged a woman in the vehicle with possession of marijuana.

According to police, troopers were on patrol Thursday when they saw a vehicle going at a high rate of speed. While the driver, 23-year-old Rahfet N. Shehadeh, was being interviewed troopers say an odor of marijuana was coming from the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, a blue and yellow children’s book bag was discovered in the trunk, according to police. The book bag was mostly unzipped and thumb-sized wrappings were reportedly seen in plain view. Troopers reported finding seven wrappings in magazine paper “consistent with packaged heroin.”

Shehadeh was pre-arraigned for detention at the Ontario County Jail. Alyssa Davis, 27, also of Syracuse and a passenger in the vehicle, was charged with possessing about 2 grams of marijuana. Davis was issued an appearance ticket.
