Galen Historical Society will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Erie Canal during its quarterly meeting at 6:30 p.m. April 24 at Brick Church Museum, 31 N. Park St., Clyde.
Canal Society of New York board member Bruce Schwendy discuss the canal’s history, which he has researched for 15 years. Schwendy has written several articles for CSNY’s publication, Bottoming Out. He and his wife have traveled the canal system on their houseboat, the Lil’ Rooster.
After the business meeting, guests will share desserts provided by GHS members. The next quarterly meeting will be joint celebration picnic with Strengthening Our Area Residents and Clyde Strategic Planning Network on July 17 at Lauraville Landing on Water Street in Clyde. Erie Fiddlers and the Votilla, a group of boats on the Erie Canal, will discuss women’s suffrage at the event.
