Sheriff Barry Virts along with town and village officials along Lake Ontario recently declared a special state of emergency for all Wayne County bays and harbors.
The declaration includes Sodus Bay, Port Bay, East Bay, Blind Sodus Bay, Pultneyville Harbor and Bear Creek Harbor.
Motorized boat traffic must operate at idle speed without a wake on bays and harbors. Water levels to date were reported to be at or above flooding level — 247.3 feet.
Public safety concerns include floating debris and submerged obstructions that are usually visible, property damage and shoreline erosion.
