The village of Newark will host its 11th annual Community Pride Day Clean-up from 9:30 a.m. to noon May 20 starting at T. Spencer Knight Park, 199 Van Buren St., Newark.
This year’s theme is “Color Our Community with Pride.” Volunteers will plant flowers, pull weeds and clean up litter at various location across Newark. Work crews will clean the canal banks, parks, canal trails, area around old locks 58 and 59, parking lots, village streets and wherever debris removal is necessary.
Residents, schools and village businesses are invited to participate in a villagewide floral planting effort by cleaning up trash and planting flowers around their home yards and storefronts this spring.
Four Newark retail business are offering discounts for residents to support the effort: HEP Sales/North Main Lumber/Builder’s Bargain Outlet, 6592 state Route 31, 10 percent off any exterior product purchased from HEP Builder’s Bargain Outlet through June 15; Plassche Lumber and Plywood Inc., 1551 state Route 88, 20 percent off all house paint and painting accessories May 20-June; Q’s Landscape Enterprise Inc., 1442 Welcher Road, free pickup and delivery on any new purchase or repair and 10 percent off all garden center plants May 20-June 5; and Secor Hardware and Home Center, Miller and Finch streets, paint, lawn and garden and plant specials.
The village will award $200 to the most colorful Newark business exterior and resident front yard. Contest entries must be received by 1 p.m. May 17. Judging will take place May 22.
