Officers and members of Lyons Elks Lodge No. 869 recently observed Flag Day in honor of the nation’s symbol of freedom.
Local Elks Leader Christine VanDeWalle led the officers and members in the celebration.
Members of Lyons American Legion Post conducted a flag disposal ceremony for American flags no longer serviceable. New York Color Guard performed the rifle salute and taps during the closing portion of the ceremony. Members of Lyons Elementary School Band performed several musical selections for the community members in attendance.
Matt Albanese was recognized for recently receiving Boy Scouts’ highest award as Eagle Scout.
Three students from Lyons Middle School received recognition for their award-winning Americanism essays: Ayden Jacob, Brendin Filetti and Jerell Petty. Julie Wunder, Elks district Americanism chairman, introduced students as they read their essays for those present. Each student was presented with the original framed copy of their essay.
Local members of Boy and Girl Scout troops participated during the ceremony by displaying the various flags in the nation’s history.
