Heartfelt words of praise, expressions of gratitude and memories were shared at a recent reception for Newark Central School District staff members who retired at the end of the 2016-17 school year.
The hourlong event held in Newark High School Library started with Superintendent Matt Cook expressing appreciation for the former employees’ many years of faithful service to NCSD along with his congratulations.
Principals Tom Roote, of NHS; Teresa Prinzi, of Newark Middle School; Jeff Hamelinck, of Kelley School; Sue Achille, of Perkins School; and Stephanie Miller, of Lincoln School, took turns highlighting attributes and anecdotes about each of the staff members.
The reception was attended by the retiring staffs’ family members and board of education members Russ Harris, president; Eric DeTaeye, vice president; Susie Earl; Tom Ledbetter; Rebecca Vermeulen; and Jim Miranda.
The 14 staff members who retired at the end of the 2016-17 school year were Ann Allerton, 20 years, NMS nurse; Kathleen Chambers, 32 years, Lincoln second-grade teacher; Holly Chapin Burgess, 24 years, occupational therapist; Janice Comer, 22 years, Kelley nurse; Wendy DePorter, 29 years, Kelley fifth-grade teacher; Jan Fellenz, 16 years, NHS science teacher; Molly Fleckenstein, 27 years, NHS English teacher; Isabelle Jensen, five years, NHS family and consumer science teacher; Marlene McIlwain, 22 years, NMS receptionist/clerical worker; Barb Mikler-Crandon, 21 years, NHS family and consumer science teacher; Rose Taglialatela, 16 years, Lincoln reading teacher; Kathleen Tanea, 32 years, NHS business teacher; JoAnn Swick, 14 years, NMS teacher assistant; and Jeff Williams, 30-1/2 years, NHS social studies teacher.
Punch, pizza and pastries were available for attendees to enjoy.
