Pirates of the Erie Canal will invade Port of Palmyra Marina and the village Aug. 11-12 during Historic Palmyra’s annual Pirate Weekend.
The weekend will kick-off with a free screening of “The Princess Bride” at 8 p.m. Aug. 11 in Palmyra Village Park on state Route 31.
Attendees will enjoy giveaways from Mix 98.5 FM, performances by Studio Z Performance Arts Conservatory and Pirate Kazoo Band and hot dogs and snacks from Palmyra Fire Auxiliary.
Donations of nonperishable food items will be accepted for Palmyra Food Pantry. Bring a blanket and chairs.
Festival highlights Aug. 12 are the Pirate Regatta Bed Race, Pirate and Kazoo Band Parade, Erie Canal boat rides on Corn Hill Navigation’s Sam Patch, Music in the Marina with Sam Nitsch and the Jolly Roger 5K benefitting Palmyra-Macedon Select Choir.
Guests are encouraged to dress like a pirate and join the parade.
Pre-built pirate beds are available for the race. Five-person teams can register online. Participants must be ages 16 and older.
Additional planned activities include a chicken barbecue, dunking booth, old-time photos, vendors and artisans, food, children’s games, wine and cider tastings, Historic Palmyra museums and walking tours, a treasure hunt and pirate tales.
The Pirates Bazaar will offer sales from Palmyra’s Main Street merchants.
Artists of all ages are encouraged to participate in the Palmyra Window Painting Contest from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 5 in Palmyra Village Park. Paints and paper will be provided. Created artwork will be exhibited in merchant windows on Main Street through Pirate Weekend.
Participants will be eligible for awards and cash prizes, including a $20 grand prize in each age group. Prizes will be awarded Aug. 12 at Palmyra Marina after the bed races.
