PALMYRA — A Palmyra man was charged with attempted burglary after allegedly being seen by a sheriff’s deputy cutting the screen to a residence window in the village of Palmyra.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Brian Steinruck saw Matthew R. Scriber, 31, of 314 W. Main St., Palmyra, on Gates Street in the village, but Scriber disappeared when Steinruck drove past him. Steinruck checked the area and found Scribner on the first-story roof of an elderly Gates Street resident’s home, cutting a screen to a second-story window, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies say Scribner jumped off the roof on the opposite side of the residence, and Steinruck chased him on foot, taking him into custody about 100 yards from the residence.

Scribner was charged with second-degree attempted burglary and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He was arraigned in Palmyra Village Court and remanded to the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.
