State tax officials say many of those checks have already gone out. About 38,000 STAR checks are already out - that's less than a third of them. Around 68 percent of recipients are still waiting for their checks.

New York State is trying to get a head start on this year's School Tax Relief (STAR) rebate checks.

State tax officials say many of those checks have already gone out. About 38,000 STAR checks are already out - that's less than a third of them. Around 68 percent of recipients are still waiting for their checks.

STAR is the program for homeowners that provides a discount on school taxes. Last year, the state did things a little differently. Instead of the discount coming right off your tax bill, they sent you a rebate check from Albany. It led to headaches for many people - some were shorted and some got their checks late.

The state is hoping to avoid those issues this fall. Officials say STAR checks should be out before you have to pay your school tax.
