Amazon wants to deliver packages inside your home, even when you're not there.
The service is called Amazon Key and it's designed to cut down on package theft. First you'd have to buy an Amazon Key Kit that comes with a camera system that would record the whole delivery and you'd know what time to expect the package.
Some people like Arson Jamkotchian say they can't get over the idea of a stranger in their house, even though he’s been a victim of package theft in the past.
“That's kind of a cool interesting new concept I guess,” Jamkotchian said. “The risk there is much greater than having your package stolen.”
The Amazon Key kit comes with a cloud cam which would record all deliveries, saving it all to the cloud and the smart lock would allow the delivery person inside. Each time a delivery person comes in the smart lock generates a one-time virtual key. The Cloud Kit will cost $250 and you'll need an Amazon Prime account, which costs $99 a year. But for James VanDemark, the price isn't the problem.
"I would probably be skeptical because that stranger despite his or her good intentions would still have to face my dog once the door is open,” VanDemark said.
The service lets you watch the delivery from your phone on an app. An Amazon spokesperson says the delivery people are thoroughly vetted with background checks. Brianna Robinson says she would give it a try.
"As long as everyone is being safe, I like the camera idea, and making sure the homeowner knows exactly what's going on,” Robinson said. “[If] there's no snooping around I think that it's okay.”
Amazon officials envision customers using the new service for more than deliveries. Customers can use Amazon Key for house cleaners, plumbers and all other in home services allowing you to open your door remotely.
Amazon Key has launched in 37 cities in the United States and none of them are in the Rochester area right now.
