The New York State Tourism Industry Association recognized individuals and organizations for their high level of excellence and accomplishments in the state’s tourism industry at the 2017 Tourism Excellence Awards Dinner at The Glen Club of Watkins Glen International.
Wayne County Apple Tasting Tour received the award for cultural heritage tourism by a small budget entity. This award is presented to entities that leverage cultural heritage opportunities to increase visitation to local communities and stimulate their economies.
Christine Worth, executive director of the Wayne County Office of Tourism in Lyons, the lead agency in the program, accepted the award on behalf of all participating partners.
The NYSTIA awards committee selected Wayne County Apple Tasting Tour for its collaboration among local tourism partners, including the county tourism office, produce growers, farmers markets, wineries and Wayne County Cornell Cooperative Extension, working in a grassroots way to encourage appreciation of Wayne County as the top apple-producing county in the state. Utilizing a modest budget, the tour leveraged the county’s natural resources to find new visitors, keep visitors coming back for more and positively impacting local revenue.
The winning individuals or organizations of NYSTIA’s 2017 Tourism Excellence Awards were nominated by their peers and reviewed by the awards committee. Recipients were selected based on demonstrated commitment, leadership and accomplishment in travel and tourism.
“As the fourth largest employer in the state of New York, the tourism industry continues to grow and evolve, leading to evermore impressive accomplishments,” said Jill Delaney, NYSTIA president and CEO. “We are honored to have a night set aside to recognize the successes of our industry innovators with the goal of inspiring creativity and passion throughout New York state’s tourism industry.”
