Ontario soldier joins New York Army National Guard unit
Pvt. Michael Cassata, of Ontario, recently completed Army basic combat and advanced individual trainings, and was welcomed to his unit during a New York Army National Guard battle handoff ceremony at Patriot Way Armory in Rochester.
Cassata joined Company D. 1st Battalion, 171st Aviation as a part-time citizen soldier.
The ceremony marked his completion of the National Guard Recruit Sustainment program, which provides new recruits with training, lessons and skills to excel at their initial military training.
Macedon student receives Alfred State scholarship
Logan Savitcheff, of Macedon, recently received a $9,500 All-American Scholarship to attend Alfred State.
To be eligible, students must earn a minimum 89 cumulative high school average through their junior year and achieve at least a 1220 combined reading/writing and math new SAT or a composite ACT score of 24. Recipients must maintain a required GPA to receive free board in subsequent semesters.
Savitcheff is slated to graduate from Penfield Senior High School in 2018. He intends to enroll in the diagnostic medical sonography program.
Wayne County Tourism names Apple Tasting Tour winners
Over 400 participants filled out challenge forms during Wayne County Tourism’s 2017 Apple Tasting Tour.
By sending in the challenge form, participants were eligible to win one of four gift baskets. The Apple Tasting Tour is a self-driven route that visits farm markets, wineries, cideries and a distillery.
This year’s winners are Cynthia Graves, of Brockport, first prize; Francis Abel, of Rochester, second prize; Jen Stanton, of Macedon, third prize; and Mary McClellan, of Wolcott, fourth prize.
