Perkins School music teacher Maria Walton recently came up with a creative way to benefit Newark Food Closet — ask those attending Newark Central School District’s music concerts to bring one or more nonperishable food item with them.
The idea was approved by other music teachers, including Cindy Briggs, Kelley School instrumental music teacher and K-12 music department leader. Walton started asking for collections to benefit Newark Food Closet at a recent veterans salute concert at Newark High School.
“There are over 700 kids in our district that are involved in music, and if their families, friends and relatives attend their concerts and bring a food item to donate with them, that will really help the Newark Food Closet,” Walton said. “The food closet always gets a lot of donations during the holiday season, but then it drops off drastically in winter and spring. I am hoping that people will bring food items to all of our concerts.
“Once the word gets out, I am hoping people will associate going to a concert with making a donation to the food closet. I have flyers made up for the music teachers to send home with the kids along with their concert information letters. I would like to get the word out about this to as many people in the area as possible, since not all who attend the concerts have a son or daughter in school and may not know of our mission.”
Newark Food Closet currently serves over 1,200 families from Newark, Port Gibson and East Palmyra.
Walton will collect food at the Sixth-grade Band/Chorus Concert at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 at Newark Middle School, 701 Peirson Ave.; Seventh- and Eighth-grade Band/Chorus Holiday Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 6 at NMS; Kelley School Band and Choir Holiday Concert at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14 at Kelley School, 316 W.
