Wayne County Sheriff's deputies say an 18-year-old Wolcott resident who crashed a vehicle shortly after midnight Thursday morning escaped from the car before it caught fire.

Wayne County Sheriff's deputies say an 18-year-old Wolcott resident who crashed a vehicle shortly after midnight Thursday morning escaped from the car before it caught fire. Deputies said the driver and sole occupant, Jordan High, 18, escaped with minor scrapes and was checked out by EMS before being released.

Deputies said the one-vehicle crash happened on Wiley Road in the town of Savannah. According to deputies, an investigation revealed that a 2013 Ford Escape was northbound on Wiley Road when the operator fell asleep and exited the east side of the road clipping a telephone pole. The vehicle rolled two times coming to rest in a corn field with electrical wires on it from the telephone pole. The vehicle caught fire as a result of the downed wires.

Deputies were helped at the scene by state police, Savannah Fire Department, Clyde Fire Department and Eastern Wayne ALS.
