The locations in Greece and Henrietta are among 63 Sam's Club stores being closed by Walmart
Walmart is closing 63 Sam's Club stores across the US, according to the Business Insider, including two in the Rochester area.
Walmart spokesperson Phillip Keene tells the Daily Messenger 's news partner News 10NBC that the Greece and Henrietta locations will close on Jan. 26.
Approximately 300 local employees will be impacted by the closures. Keene says the company is trying to place the employees in other Walmart stores.
Affected workers will be paid for an additional 60 days after the closing later this month. Employees who don't get placed in Walmart stores will be offered a severance package.
Customers wanting to shop at either location Thursday morning were surprised to find both stores were closed for the day. News 10NBC was told both locations would reopen Friday at 10 a.m.
Customers who have Club memberships can cancel those memberships at any time, Keene says. They can also use those memberships at other Sam’s Club stores and online at samsclub.com.
Clearance sales at all stores will begin soon with merchandise starting off at a 25 percent discount.
The closures come on the same day that Walmart announced it was raising starting hourly wages to $11, expanding employee benefits, and offering workers bonuses of up to $1,000.
