Tom Petty-signed guitar highlights Humane Society auction on Jan. 28.
PALMYRA — Rocker Tom Petty left an indelible mark on the music world when he died last year at age 66.
In death, his legend has only grown.
That’s why a guitar signed by the legendary rocker and the Heartbreakers is expected to be a highly coveted item at the Humane Society of Wayne County’s 15th annual Sweetheart Auction on Sunday, Jan. 28, at the Palmyra VFW on Route 31.
Viewing starts at noon, and the first silent auction item closes at 12:45 p.m., with more taking place every 20 minutes to 30 minutes. The live auction starts about 2 p.m.
The Tom Petty and Heartbreakers-signed guitar is one of many “exceptional items” at this year’s auction, said Humane Society Director Mark Plyter.
This year’s event also features a "Star Wars" 20th anniversary 11-by-14 photo signed by Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, George Lucas, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker.
Other star-studded items include country performer Garth Brooks’ “Midnight Sun” autographed sheet music and a custom-framed 11-by-14 photo signed by Paul McCartney.
“There are other great items which are sure to make this year’s auction the best one yet,” Plyter said.
Stephanie Cooper, president of the Humane Society’s board of trustees, said the auction is a fun-filled day with “tons" of items to bid on.
She noted that “all the proceeds from our auction benefit the animals of Wayne County.”
Other items to be auctioned off include artwork, jewelry, passes to Rochester Museum and Science Center, Seneca Park Zoo, Strong Museum of Play, as well as gift baskets and gift cards.
“The Humane Society of Wayne County receives no government funding,” said Plyter. “Our operating budget comes from donations, fundraising and our fees for service. Without your help, we would not be able to make a positive difference in the lives of people and pets."
Reserve prices are set on some items, the Humane Society noted.
Event organizer Cynthia Kukuvka said this is the organization’s 15th auction and its largest fundraiser.
“As we are totally dependent on donations and fundraising, the auction is very important,” she said. “We are excited about having a diverse selection of items for the auction, which includes the Tom Petty-signed guitar. We literally have something for everyone.”
