Dr. David Blasczak built his practice in Clyde over several decades. Now, many of his patients are wondering what's next for their care.
Patients with upcoming appointments at Dr. Blasczak's office tell News10NBC they haven't heard a word about what's going to happen with their care. They're unsure if a new doctor will take over the practice, or if they'll have to seek care elsewhere.
Most people in and around the village of Clyde were patients of Dr. Blasczak.
Ray Smith had an appointment with Dr. Blasczak this week.
"The 25th, just for a checkup," Smith said. "I go see him every 6 months, so it's the 6-month checkup."
News10NBC: "Did they tell you what to expect?"
Smith: "No, I haven't talked with anybody yet, so I don't know what's going on"
Dr. Blasczak's name has been removed from the sign in front of his office.
In a statement, Finger Lakes Health wrote: "Clyde Family Health Center is part of a larger physician network, and we are working with our other offices to coordinate provider coverage and meet patient needs."
In a rural area like Clyde, where there is already a shortage of primary care providers, there may be issues for some.
"In the rural counties, it does require a little bit more travel at times and that's also a big barrier to accessing preventative medicine and using primary care versus waiting and putting this off just because it's harder to make that trip," said Chris Bell of the Monroe County Medical Society.
The hope is that any transition can happen quickly and seamlessly.
"Start with Finger Lakes Health," Bell said. "See if there's another clinic, another physician. If they don't feel comfortable doing that or if they want to transfer to a completely different practice, start by calling their insurance company or phoning the Medical Society."
The Monroe County Medical Society actually covers Wayne County, too. So they should be able to assist you in finding a new doctor if you need help. Also, when you do switch, once you sign a release, your records should be transferred quickly.
