New York State lawmakers are proposing a $1 fee on every ride in Upstate New York, according to the Assembly budget proposal.

A spokesperson for Uber said that the surcharge would be on top of the current 4% tax in New York State, bringing the total tax to an average of 12% tax per ride. The move would make New York State’s tax the highest ridesharing tax in the country.

New York City has its own congestion pricing for Uber and Lyft.
