Palmyra student earns Sheriffs’ Association honor
Finger Lakes Community College student Rachel Smith, of Palmyra, recently received a New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute award.
NYSSA grants a $250 award to one student at each New York community college who demonstrates academic excellence in the pursuit of a career in criminal justice. Smith, a 2017 graduate of Palmyra-Macedon High School, is in her second semester. She plans to transfer upon graduation, and is considering enlisting in the police academy.
She was nominated for the award by adviser James Valenti, an attorney and associate professor of criminal justice. Valenti and FLCC President Robert Nye congratulated her during a recent visit by Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts. Joseph Mariconda, associate professor of criminal justice, and Jason Maitland, director of campus safety, also attended the ceremony.
