Rick Gallant has suspended his campaign for congress.

The Democratic candidate in New York's 23rd Congressional District issued the following statement:

"It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing the suspension of my campaign for Congress in NY’s 23rd District. I would like to sincerely thank all of those who have supported me in the past year—it means the world to me. I have had the privilege of meeting the wonderful people of NY 23 and will cherish every moment spent getting to know so many amazing citizens.

After much deliberation, I accept that the challenge of raising the necessary money and resources to sustain a viable run for office has placed too great a burden on my family. We are not independently wealthy and simply can not afford the endeavor. Until campaign finance laws in the nation change, ordinary working people like myself will find the challenge of running for office is often insurmountable.

I wish the remaining candidates the best of luck and promise to put my full effort behind the winner of the primary because I believe the people of the 23rd deserve fair and honest representation."

The 23rd Congressional District of New York is represented by Republican Tom Reed of Corning. The district extends along New York's border with Pennsylvania from the shores of Lake Erie in Chautauqua County to the suburbs of Binghamton in Tioga County. It includes three of the eleven Finger Lakes: Keuka Lake, Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake.
