The Brighton Town Board voted to approve building a Whole Foods store.

People against the proposal say they were caught way off guard by this decision. In fact, a lot of people opposed to the project wanted the vote called off all together.

It's a decision years in the making, and the biggest opponents -- the Save Monroe Ave. group -- say only one group really knew what was going to happen Wednesday night.

"Look around here tonight. I see a strong contingent from the developer, perhaps even supporters, almost as though they knew the Whole Foods project would be an approval... would be voted on tonight," said Aaron Saykin, an attorney with Hodgson Russ.

Despite the opposition, the town board did vote -- unanimously -- to give the green light for the Whole Foods project to go forward. The plan is to build an 83,000 square foot development that will include a Whole Foods Market.

The Daniele Family Companies, who is developing the site, have made promises to the town. They have agreed to put a one acre buffer between the plaza and neighbors, new traffic lights with a left turn signal, and they have agreed to develop a bike trail.

The developers have also committed to not seek any tax breaks from the County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency. The Danieles say it's a win for everybody, although they could still face a possible lawsuit from a big name just down Monroe Avenue.

"The only road block left... there is still some legal opposition from possibly the Wegmans team," said Anthony Daniele. "I think it would be a mistake to file a lawsuit at this point. I think this community is well aware that competition is good."

There's been some speculation that Wegmans is funding the Save Monroe Ave. group. The group says it has the support of several business, but has never confirmed or denied if Wegmans is one of them.

The project now goes to the Town Planning Board for site approval.
