Studio for the Performing Arts in Newark recently competed in the StarQuest Regional Dance Competition at OnCenter’s Crouse Hinds Theater in Syracuse.
The SPA dance team took home high-level dance awards and awards of distinction. It won the Musicality Award for its unique, daring and creative dance concepts.
Stella Klossner, 7, won high gold and costume of distinction in the petite nova tap soloist category. Her routine to Michael Buble’s “You Make Me Feel So Young” was choreographed by Joann Mott, SPA co-owner.
SPA dance team members Leah Colletti, Sedessa Colletti, Gracie Ferguson, Jasmine Hey, Taya Hilfiker, Breanna Shippers, Lissen Turner and Milla Turner won high gold in the teen small group (classic) jazz category. SPA dance instructor Brittany Gilligan Bowman choreographed the team’s routine to Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito.”
Sedessa Colletti, 14, competed in solo (classic, teen miss) category, where she won high gold and first place. Her routine to “Castle” by Halsey was choreographed by Mary Dinan, SPA modern dance instructor.
Senior dance team members Natalie Acquista, Sedessa Colletti, Bryna Gage, Georgia Gallatin,
Kiersten Ryan, Jessica Smith, Milla Turner, Sennet Turner and Morgan Wright won platinum and a special award, “Breath of Fresh Air.” Their modern dance performance was choreographed to Khalid’s “Another Sad Love Song” by Mary Dinan, SPA modern dance instructor.
SPA offers dance education for ages 2 and older. Its dance curriculum is based in the principles of ballet; all dancers are taught proper dance terminology and form. SPA currently offers instruction in ballet, pointe, modern, jazz, lyrical, tap, hip-hop and acro.
