Ian Riseley, president of Rotary International, challenged every Rotary club to plant a tree for each of its members in 2017-18. Newark’s 100-plus Rotarians recently kicked off their plantings on Earth Day.
Newark Rotary Club is working with ERP Environmental Fund Inc. and its Newark Greenhouse managed by Rotarian Laura Bailey, the village of Newark, Lyons Trail of Hope and New York State Canal Corp. to plant 100 trees. Their selected species are chosen to meet historical forest restoration project requirements or for environmental benefits.
The first local planting was a hackberry tree at the home of the Haynes family. Remaining trees will go to Newark residences, the Trail of Hope in Lyons and along the Erie Canal this summer in contribution to the Canal Forest Reforestation Project.
