A car crash has claimed the life of an 18-year-old girl. The driver, also 18, is in ICU at Strong. Both are seniors at Hilton H.S. Minor injuries for the 64 year old driver of other vehicle. The 18-year-old passenger who died was expected to graduate from high school in the coming weeks.
A Hilton High School senior was killed and another is in the ICU following a head-on crash in Greece.
The crash happened just after 6 p.m. Sunday on Latta Road just west of Torrey Pine Lane. Police say the students, both 18-year-old girls, were in a car heading west when the driver lost control and crossed into the oncoming lane, slamming into an SUV.
Paige Smith died at the scene. The driver, whose name has not yet been released, is in intensive care at the hospital.
A 64-year-old woman who was in the SUV was also injured, but she's expected to survive.
Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan says the students may have been distracted in the seconds leading up to the accident.
"It's tough to say," Chief Phelan said. "There's some indication they may have been communicating with another vehicle...somehow waving or something to that effect, but we're working all of that out right now."
District officials issued a statement Monday morning, saying counselors are available for students and staff members.
"Our Crisis Team met this morning and we have counselors available to students and staff. Local exams are being administered today and we have follow up plans in place for any student who is struggling and cannot take the exams. However, we’re not able to be flexible about Regents exams that are scheduled during this week and next as New York State doesn’t allow any make-up dates in June. Those exams would have to be done in August, if missed."
“And so the journey begins.”
