When looking to fulfill his Eagle Scout requirements, Ben Talbot, of Troop 122, learned from Bob Hegeman that a flag pole would be a positive addition to Laurel House, a comfort care home.
After he received approval by the Laurel House board, Talbot raised money for the project with a fundraiser at BT’s Drive-in. Wayne Smith, of Smith Metal Works in Newark, offered to help with the construction of the flagpole. Sherwin Williams on West Union Street provided the paint. Funds helped to construct a base for the flagpole.
Flags were donated by Newark VFW, American Legion and U.S. Rep. John Katko, R-24th District.
Talbot’s project was brought to fruition with the flagpole’s official dedication. In attendance at the ceremony were Laurel House board members, Hegeman, members of Talbot’s family, Scouts and Bob Hutteman, Scoutmaster for Troop 122. George Knibbs and Harry Garland, of Newark VFW, participated in the event. Scouts Matthew and Michael Hutteman assisted Talbot in raising the flag.
