The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says a Newark man was drunk behind the wheel and crashed with two children in the car.

Deputies say John Malta, 35, was more than three times the legal limit. He is charged with aggravated DWI and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and several other vehicle and traffic charges.

Deputies say he crashed his minivan into some woods in Arcadia around 10 p.m. Thursday. Both kids in the car were under the age of eight and deputies say one child was not in a child safety seat.

The mother of the children, 29-year-old Shannon Trask, was also in the van and is facing charges of two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She was released on her own recognizance and is due back in court on July 18.

Malta was arraigned and remanded to the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $3,000 cash bail or $6,000 insurance bond. He is also due back in court on July 18.
