One of the great ironies of our history is how the Electoral College, created to protect our nation, has severely wounded it.
The Electoral College process was put into our Constitution for two reasons. One was to give the smaller states more power to elect a president. The second, and more important, was to create a buffer between the electorate and the presidency. Our Founding Fathers feared that a tyrant or otherwise incompetent person might in the future manipulate public opinion and come to power through the popular vote. The college was meant to be knowledgeable citizens who would have the power to overturn the popular vote if they felt the voters had been duped to select a person who, as president, would harm the nation.
However, today the electors are basically rubber stamps of the political parties, and the sad irony of the Electoral College is that in 2016 it denied the wishes of the majority of the electorate and put instead into the office of the presidency exactly the kind of person it was created to prevent. The Electoral College has, tragically, given this nation the most incompetent, corrupt, amoral and unbalanced president in its history.
