GREECE — Greece police say the body of a 5-year-old girl was found in the Erie Canal Thursday evening just a few hours after she had been reported missing.

Police speculate that the child was in the water for roughly two hours before being found.

Around 7 p.m. Greece Police were dispatched to Henpeck Park, which runs along the north shore of the Canal, for reports of a missing girl who was believed to have fallen in the water.

Greece police were assisted by scuba teams, fire departments as well as other first responders.

The body was discovered by the sheriff's scuba team.

"No sense to be made in the death of a 5-year-old girl," stated Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan. "... it's very difficult job to do and they're out there doing it. I feel so badly for the families. These are horrible tragedies ... don't know what you say to make sense of a child drowning..."

The child's name had not been released Thursday night
