Trail Works Inc. and Wegmans recently partnered with OnCell to launch Hit the Trail, a mobile tour app designed to enhance visitor experience and trail communication.
The app was built for the Hit the Trail Initiative, a collaboration between Wegmans Food Markets and Trail Works Inc. designed to get residents outdoors and on trails in their own backyard.
The Hit the Trail Wayne County app includes 30 trails and historic walking tours. To ensure visitor safety, the app has Google Maps with directions, trail information and push notifications. The app includes surveys that can be used to improve the condition or safety of trails.
“The OnCell Hit the Trail app has provided hikers with an in depth look into the features of each of the trails,” said Mark DeCracker, president of Trail Works Inc. “Hikers now can learn the history of Erie Canal or other trails, the flora, birds and animals along the trail, even what poison ivy looks like.”
Visitors can favorite locations to keep a record of their preferred trails. The app uses geo-triggered badges and passport prizes, which create an incentive for trail adventurers. All of this information is stored in the app, and can enhance visitor experience and trail communication.
“We’re excited to collaborate on this app, which encourages folks to experience the unique and diverse trails in Wayne County,” said Allison Mincher, special projects coordinator at OnCell. “It’s a great example of how technology can help foster outdoor experiences.”
The free app is available in iTunes and Google Play Store. Visit trailworks.org for information.
