The Wayne County Youth Derby recently held its 20th annual awards ceremony at Sodus Point Fire Hall.
Over 35 people enjoyed the festivities. The young anglers, who competed during the monthlong contest, were rewarded for their fishing prowess with plaques, gift cards, prizes and applause from adults and peers attending the ceremony.
Gene VanDeusen, president of Wayne County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, spoke to attendees after the hot dog lunch, and thanked parents who took time to introduce their children to fishing.
Madison Prutzman, a derby alumna who started fishing the derby when she was 5, acknowledged the winning anglers who fished the summer derby. Prutzman, 18, studies pre-medicine at Alfred University. Nancy Wilkes presented the trophies and plaques.
Logan Smith, 5, of Wolcott, won the Al Shultz Memorial Challenge in the ages 4-7 division. Smith caught all six species in the division.
No one in the ages 8-16 division caught all five fish for the Merchants Challenge.
Marie Humbert, of Hilton, caught a smallmouth bass weighing 3.05 pounds. Parker Williamson, of Lyons, caught a 4.06-pound largemouth bass. Shane Scharett, of Marion, caught a perch that weighed 1.04 pounds. Blake Dora, of Wolcott, caught a 6-pound northern pike, and took first place with his walleye that weighed 4.03 pounds.
