Aretha Franklin's father was a pastor at a Baptist church in Buffalo and her mother worked at Buffalo General Hospital.

The family lived in the Cold Springs neighborhood on the city's east side.

When her father moved to Detroit, Franklin went with him, but her mother stayed in Buffalo. She would visit during her summer vacations until her mother died in 1952.

Franklin died Thursday at her home in Detroit at the age of 76.
