Wayne County Action Program Inc. is seeking volunteers to act as New York State Mentoring Program coordinators for immediate placement in Wayne County schools.
The Finger Lakes Living Healthy AmeriCorps positions with the programs in Lyons, North Rose-Wolcott, Clyde-Savannah and Red Creek school districts are multistage roles.
The first portion is to help in making sure there are an adequate number of mentor/mentee matches. This can be accomplished by working with the districts to identify appropriate upperclassmen to serve as peer mentors within the district and by approaching adults from the community to serve as adult mentors.
Identified mentors will be screened and interviewed to determine appropriate matches before being paired with their mentees. The mentor will be asked to sign an agreement to commit to weekly meetings for consistency.
Once mentor/mentee matches are made, it is the AmeriCorps mentor coordinators’ responsibility to make sure the weekly sessions run smoothly. Coordinators plan activities for the sessions, make sure all mentees are paired up with mentors and record participation.
In addition to recording attendance, coordinators will be responsible for reporting, with the assistance of school staff, on how the mentees have progressed over the school year in areas of academic achievement, social skills and emotional development.
