The Palmyra-Macedon Lions Club offers eye-screenings for young children, typically those in preschool, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.
Don Dantz, chairperson, takes the computerized specialty eye camera to area schools with Linda Pulcini and Rowena Redmond to screen classes and groups. This camera creates a report for parents to take to the eye doctor for further action.
If follow up is needed, the club can offer assistance to involve health insurance and other avenues to supply the necessary examinations and glasses. Other clubs borrow Pal-Mac’s camera for their own schools.
The club meets four times each year to clean the section of state Route 31 between Macedon and Palmyra. Its last garbage pickup is set for the first week of November. The club’s typical haul is 300 pounds of trash, plus unusual personal items.
Wooden boxes are set up around town to collect eyeglasses that are no longer needed or wanted. Lions members pick up these donations whenever the boxes are full. The club has collected almost 1,500 pairs of glasses since June 2018, which are reprocessed, repaired and sent to needed areas.
Children from Palmyra and Macedon will dress up in costumes and visit local store owners as they pass out candy for trick or treating on Main Street from 2 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 27. The club will set up in front of the Park and Club Rooms.
The Halloween Costume Parade will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Palmyra-Macedon Primary School. Judges will select the winners in six categories. Lions volunteers will pass out red licorice sticks during the event. Palmyra Community Center will provide cider and doughnuts.
The Warm Winter Project provides knitted hats, gloves and scarves to those in need. The club recently took over this project, and has many locations filled with these knitted pieces.
The Pal-Mac Lions Club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at the Alling Coverlet Museum, 122 William St., Palmyra. Guests will receive a free meal at their first meeting. Volunteer opportunities are available to deliver Angel Tree gifts in December.
