Helpful Hearts Community Closet Inc., 44 William St., Lyons, seeks “to be a valuable resource to anyone [it] encounter[s] by helping them gain items necessary to improve their quality of life,” according to its mission statement.
Founder Carolyn Cook started helping families in May 2016. The new storefront includes a thrift store and food pantry for those in need.
Helpful Hearts provides holiday items and winter coats to children, hosts school supply and clothing drives in August, and puts on two events in December for toys and coats. Volunteers pick up and deliver local donations at no cost.
The Kicks for Kids program collects and distributes new or gently used shoes to elementary school children. The community closet hosts monthly giveaway events on the same day as Foodlink distributions.
Helpful Hearts is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays-Fridays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Volunteer opportunities are available.
