Retired music teacher Maria Walton is continuing her volunteer work to help the Newark Food Closet by collecting donations at 12 school district concerts in 2018-19.
Concertgoers are asked to bring at least one nonperishable food item that will go to the Food Closet.
“Last year, we collected a total of 633 items,” Walton said, noting the over 700 students in Newark who are involved with music. “We are hoping to beat that this year. If families, friends and relatives attend the concerts and bring a food item to donate with them, that will really help the Newark Food Closet.
“The Food Closet always gets a lot of donations during the holiday season, but then it drops off drastically in winter and spring. I am hoping that people will bring food items to all of our concerts. I am hoping people will associate going to a concert with making a donation to the Food Closet.
The Newark Food Closet currently serves over 1,200 families from Newark, Port Gibson and East Palmyra.
Walton will collect food during the following concerts at Kelley School, 316 W. Miller St., Newark; Newark Middle School, 701 Peirson Ave.; and Newark High School, 625 Peirson Ave.
