Trail Works Inc. recently led 61 hikers on three First Day treks around Wayne County.
First Day Hikes started in 1992 in Massachusetts as a way to start the new year outside, rather than in front of a TV or computer screen at home. America’s State Parks took the concept nationwide in 2012. Trail Works has participated in the program for five years.
The Casey Park hike in Ontario drew 27 participants. It started with a mile down the “easy side” astride the ore bed. Half of the group returned via the same route; the other half took the more challenging route on the ridge above the ore bed. Refreshments were served in the parking lot after the hike.
Nine hikers traveled on the Black Brook Trail between Clyde and Lyons. At the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge, 25 people spotted eagles nesting and in flight.
Trail Works will lead a Moonlight Hike at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Crowfield Farms, 2480 Arcadia Zurich Road, Newark, as well as a winter hike, snowshoe and cross-country ski from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 10 at an apple farm on Stoney Lonesome Road in Williamson.
