Kiera Lorenzo didn’t have any trouble gaining acceptance on the Brighton softball team in her first season. Even though the eighth grader was much younger than the typical varsity rookie.
Lorenzo’s hard work on the diamond not only caught the attention of her teammates, but Division I colleges. On Thursday, the second baseman rewarded everyone’s faith in her.
Lorenzo signed her national letter of intent to play for St. Bonaventure beginning next season. She made history becoming the first Baron softball player to receive a Division I scholarship.
Lorenzo is a three-time all-county player and has a .431 batting average since joining the varsity team. She chose Bonaventure over several other schools including Niagara, Albany and Buffalo.
Why did you choose St. Bonaventure for next year?
“Obviously to play softball. I am really excited to be a part of the program. They are building and getting better every year. The coach is great, too. I just love the whole atmosphere of the school, everything I appealed to me. I am excited to start playing.”
What was it like playing varsity softball in the eighth grade?
“Everyone was obviously much older than me so it was intimidating at first. But (head coach Mark Hoyt) and the older girls were extremely ince. They welcomed me, and gave me an opportunity to play. From then on I kept playing, and I loved it.”
What are your thoughts on this year’s Brighton softball team?
“I expect big things this year. I think we have a chance to go all the way and win sectionals. We have to sick to our plan and everyone has to play well. I think we can win sectionals this year.”
What was the college search process like for you?
“It was difficult at times. It took a few years to get it going. Last summer was when I started contacting people and started hearing back. It took a lot of hard work, but I am glad it paid off.”
What are the biggest area’s of improvement you want to make before getting to college?
“Probably with my hitting. My strongest area is fielding. I dive and play well out in the field, that is my thing. Hitting I feel like I have been pretty average, but I think I am getting better every year. That’s where I need to improve to have an impact.”
