She was born near the Rhine River in Arnhem, the Netherlands, on May 24, 1927. She was the third oldest of six children. During the Nazi occupation of her city, she spent a year and a half in hiding, living in barns in the countryside. That story of survival was one she told her entire life.
In 1949, she married John VanDorp in the Netherlands. Three days later they traveled to the United States and made Terra Ceia, N.C. their first home. There they had four children. In 1955, they moved to Marion where three more children were born.
Nellie loved children and education. After her own children were mostly grown, she drove others to school on the bus. When retired from bus driving, she continued to go to school as an aide in art class, and sometimes to teach Dutch or to tell stories about her experiences during World War II. For many years she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School where she shared deep faith in Christ and her love of the arts.
She loved to knit and to teach others to knit. In her lifetime she transformed thousands of miles of yarn into sweaters and slippers.
Nellie is survived by seven children, John (Nancy), Will (Elizabeth), Joan (Rich), Lucy (John), Cookie (Geoff), Rick, and Tim (Linda); 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Gilbert VerBeek, in Nebraska.
Nellie was predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, John VanDorp on March 23, 2007; brothers, Marten and William; sisters, Gerrie VerBeek and Miepe Bootsma.
