Allen, Robert L.
LYONS — Passed away Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at Blossom View Nursing home in Sodus at the age of 88.

Friends and family may call Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Weeks-Keysor Funeral Home at 5 Phelps St. in Lyons, where a funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in South Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Bob’s memory.

Bob was born April, 25, 1923 in Lyons, a son to Warren and Rose Oswald Allen. He was a veteran of the Army during World War II and was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Lyons VFW.

He is survived by son Robert (Martha) Allen Jr. of Newark; daughter Sandra Allen of Rochester; three grandchildren, Robert III, April and Jason Allen; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob was predeceased by his wife Mary in 1978, stepson Philip Compton in 1992 and several brothers and sisters.

Appell, Timothy S.
NEWARK/MANCHESTER  — Timothy S. Appell, 48, died on Sept. 3, 2011 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Tim was born July 7, 1963 in Newark, the son of Roy L. and Joan Appell. He was a graduate of Newark High School.

He is survived by his children, Jesse and Ashley Appell; parents, Roy L. and Joan Appell; brothers, Roy B. Appell of Virginia, James (Helen) and Mark (Ana) Appell both of Newark, and Douglas Appell of Manchester; sister, Cindy (Mike) Diamond of Texas; and his business partner and best friend, Laura Hauser of East Rochester.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Sept. 8 at the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Newark.

Beader, Arlene F.
CLIFTON SPRINGS/NEWARK — Died Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at Clifton Springs Nursing Home at the age of 94 .

Family and friends called Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc. at 124 W. Miller St. in Newark. A funeral service followed calling hours at noon with the Rev. Roger Smith officiating. Burial in East Newark Cemetery.

Mrs. Beader was born the daughter of the late John and Florence (DeWeaver) DeCann on Jan. 21, 1917 in the town of Arcadia. A life-member of the United Methodist Church of Newark and member of the Top of the Hill Retiree Club and the CSEA state union. Mrs. Beader enjoyed driving her little car all around, spending time in Florida and working in her flower garden. She retired from the Newark Developmental Center in 1979.

Chambers, Dorothy E.
NEWARK/LYONS — Died Monday, Sept. 5, 2011 at the DeMay Living Center at the age of 83.
Friends called from 4-6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 12 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home at 127 E. Miller St. in Newark, where funeral services followed at 6 p.m. Burial in East Newark Cemetery.

Mrs. Chambers was born Nov. 12, 1927 in Oswego, the daughter of the late Gordon and Mary Pelton Doyle.  She at one time owned and operated Dotty’s Restaurant with her husband and then was a cook in various other restaurants in the Lyons area.

Dorothy is survived by three sons Oscar Conaway Jr. of Lyons, Edward Conaway of North Carolina and Keith Conaway of Newark; 10 grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Charles Chambers, a daughter Mary Ellen Herd and brothers Art and Emerson Doyle.

Cypressi, Mary (Biviano)
ONTARIO — Died on Sept. 9, 2011 in her 100th year.

Predeceased by her husband Angelo; son Roger; daughters-in-law Debi and Rosalie; three siblings. She is survived by her children, Sam Cypressi, Sandy (Jacque) Cypressi; grandchildren, Brenda (Jeff), Kelly (John), Kimberly, Michael (Jennifer), Cathy (Stan), Matthew, Joanne (Ron), Tom, Sammy, Mary (Chris); several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends attended her Committal Service at 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 12 at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Her Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13 at St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Ontario.

Gorall, Robert J.
NEWARK/RED CREEK — Died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011 at his home in Red Creek at the age of 78.  

Friends called from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home at 127 E. Miller St. in Newark. Funeral services were held at 11 AM Thursday, Sept. 8 at the funeral home.  Burial in East Palmyra Cemetery.

Mr. Gorall was born Jan. 6, 1933 in Rochester, the son of the late Frank and Viola Hoffman Gorall. He attended East High School in Rochester before enlisting in the Navy, serving on the USS Wm. M Wood. Bob attended RIT in Rochester while working as an ironworker. In 1995, he retired, after a 35-year career at Xerox where Bob was an inspector in the tool and gage lab. While living in Newark, he co-founded the Arcadia Historical Society in 1992. Over the years, he had worked on several Native American historical dig sites. Bob served on the Rochester Native American Cultural Center Board of Directors from 1985-1994 and was co-founder of the 1794 Canandiagua Treaty Commemoration Committee. He was adopted into the Hawk Clan of the Iroquois Allegheny Seneca Nation on May 2, 1993 and was named Ha Je No Who Seh meaning “He Helps”.  Bob served on the Board of Directors of the Rochester Academy of Science (Anthropology Section), was past president of the New York State Archaeological Association and a representative of the NYSAA Eastern States Archaeology.  A past president of the Lewis Henry Morgan Chapter (NYSAA), he also was a member of the William Beauchamp and Thousand Islands Chapters.  Bob had been Associate Editor of the “The Iroquoin” from 1981-1991 and had several articles published in both “The Iroquoian and the “NYSAA Bulletin & Journal”.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Muriel; sons Jeffrey (Kim) of Mesa, Ariz., Thomas (Joretta) of Clifton Springs, David (Jana) Mitchell of Peyton, Colo.; daughters Christina (Roger) Champion of Red Creek, Julia (David) Young of Newark; 11 granddaughters, two grandsons and 23 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and good friends. He was predeceased by a daughter Charlotte, two sons Patrick and Stephen Mitchell, four brothers and three sisters.

Harry, Phillip
NEWARK/ARCADIA — Entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 at his home after an 11-year battle with cancer at the age of 62.

Fulfilling Phil’s wishes all services will be private. In memory of Phil please consider donations to a charity of your choice.

Phil was born the son of the late Ivan and Mary (Blevens) Harry on September 21, 1948 in Sophia, West Virginia. He was a high school graduate from Woodrow Wilson High School in Berkley, Va. A 2007 retiree of Ultralife Batteries in Newark where he worked as a production supervisor. Phil was an avid hunter, fisherman and an all around outdoors man.

The funeral home proudly flies the Army flag in honor of his service to our country during the Vietnam War.

Hughes, Howard L.
LYONS — Died Friday, Sept. 2, 1011, after a short illness at the age of 79.

A reception honoring Howard was held Saturday, Sept. 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lyons American Legion on Water St. in Lyons. Memorials may be made to the Veteran Outreach Program, c/o Wayne County Veterans Office, Route 31, Lyons 14489. Burial will take place at Sampson Veterans Cemetery at the families convenience.

Howard was born Aug. 14, 1932, in East Rochester, the son of Mack and Meta Hawkins Hughes. He had worked for 25 years for Mobile Chemical Company and for Reva Plastics in Port Byron. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and had served as Commander of the Lyons American Legion four times. He was a member of the VFW of Lyons and of the Disabled American Veterans. He transported many veterans to area hospitals and doctor appointments over the years.

He is survived by two sons, Craig and Scott (Terry) Hughes of Lyons; daughter Tami (Mike) McIlwain of Clyde; eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; brother William (Sue) Hughes of East Rochester and good friend Meme of Lyons.
He was predeceased by his wide, Kathryn, who died Dec. 8, 2007; and son, Todd, who died May 2011.

Robinson, Thelma (Boughton Pullen)
LYONS — Died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 at the Wayne County Nursing Home at the age of 91.
Friends called from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 8 at Boeheim-Pusateri Funeral Home at 77 William St. in Lyons. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 9 at the funeral home with Steve Wickman officiating. Burial in South Lyons Cemetery. Reception followed at 103 Layton St. in Lyons.

Thelma was born in Newark June 4, 1920 the daughter of Daniel and Sara Bouwens Boughton, She worked for Sarah Coventry as a secretary, for Fikes Insurance in Newark and for Schafers Community Store. She was a member of the Lyons Fire Department Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary of Lyons and Maranatha Baptist Church of Lyons, Palmyra Moose and the Women of the Moose.

Survived by her husband of 20 years, Milford (Rob) Robinson; daughter, Betty Schafer of Lyons; two sons James (Marge) and William (Barbara) Pullen of Lyons; sister Elnora Brevet of Fairville; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her first husband, James Pullen on July 22, 1988.

Ava was born in Austria on May 5, 1945, the daughter of Henry and Maria Keller, She worked at the Wayne County Nursing Home for seven years. She and her husband Ernie taught ceramics classes. She liked gardening and had a green thumb.

She is Survived by her husband of 46 years, Ernie; daughter Maureen (Thau) Ho of Collegeville, Pa.; two grandsons, Jason and Alex, many friends.
