Eagles follow Section V title with top prize on March 4 at competition in Syracuse
The Wayne Central Varsity Cheerleaders competed March 4 at the state cheerleading championships held at the SRC center at Onondaga Community College in the Division ll Large.
After the preliminary round, Wayne Central was ranked in fourth place out of 8 teams, which advanced the Eagles to the finals. After performing nearly a perfect routine, Wayne was named the New York State champions, increasing its score from preliminaries to finals by almost 30 points.
This was the first time ever competing at states and they took home the title and capped Wayne’s first-ever undefeated season with the school’s first state champion in any sport.
The previous Saturday, the Wayne cheerleaders won a Section V championship to clinch a berth in the state championships.
"I told the team that it's hard to win a title, but it's even harder to maintain it,” Wayne coach Stephanie Lee said after the Section V competition. “If they want to be the best, they must work the hardest. Here we are. Six competitions, two Sectional titles, two League titles, a Grand Champion title, and a first place title later.
“They earned the right to qualify for this championship and regardless of the outcome, we walk in as a family and we leave as a family.”
Wayne’s title was one of five titles for Section V teams, which swept the competition. Eastridge won the co-ed title, Fairport won the Division I Large title, Greece Athena won the Division I Small title and Avon won the Division II Small title.
