Swan leads Reds past Bombers, which leads off our weekly recap of area sports

What a way to cap a career.

Kalista Swan scored three goals and assisted on another to help the Newark girls lacrosse team beat East Rochester, 9-4, on Wednesday in the final home game of the regular season for the Reds. 

Fellow seniors Alivia Moore, Kaitlyn Herman, Lauren Schroo and Katie Thoms all scored one goal each in the win. Sophomore Caitlin Chopan and freshman Grace Gajan scored one goal each and Alexis Horn made 11 saves for the Reds.

Maddie Walsh led East Rochester with all four goals.



Section V Tournament

Class B

Newark 3, Pal-Mac 0

Zach DeVito pitched a complete-game one-hitter for No. 2 Newark, striking out eight and walking five.

Ben Cowles hit a two-run triple for the Reds, and Lucas DeVito was 2-for-3. Zach DeVito hit a double.

CJ Wahl had the only hit, a single, for Pal-Mac.

Nate Tuper took the loss for No. 10 Pal-Mac (9-10). He pitched a complete game, giving up six hits while striking out five and walking two.

Newark (18-4) advances to play Hornell at a site to be determined on Wednesday.

Class D

Gananda 9, Midlakes 8 (OT)

Melissa Camp scored the overtime winner for Gananda late in the first overtime period. It was her fifth goal of the game.

Alaina Forbes scored three goals, including one with 59 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Jordan Naeye scored two goals for Midlakes.



Section V Tournament

Class B

Newark 12, Dansville 1

Caden Murray pitched a one-hitter for the Reds, striking out four and walking one. He also went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Ryan Velte had three hits and drove in two runs and Zach DeVito hit two doubles and drove in three runs.

Palmyra-Macedon 2, Midlakes 1

Midlakes rallied with one run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get another run to extend the game, and it season.

Class C1

Letchworth 2, Sodus 1

Alex Savory struck out 17 batters for Sodus and was the tough-luck loser. Dylan Remington’s RBI-double was the difference in the game.


Section V Tournament

Class C1

North Rose-Wolcott 5, Byron-Bergen 4

Bri Boone pitched out of a seventh-inning jam with the bases loaded to help the Cougars win their first Section V game in school history.

Shayla Morris had two hits with an RBI and Taylor Malchoff drove in two runs.

Class A2

Wayne 20, Monroe 1 (5)

Amanda Blakley tripled and drove in five runs overall and Nia Black had four hits for the Eagles.

Mikayla Burmeister struck out nine and Haley Albano had two singles.


Boys lacrosse

Brockport 8, Newark 7

Parker Casselman and Ryan Farley each had two goals and two assists for the Reds, and Jacob Napolean scored twice.

Talyn Pierce made seven saves for Newark.

Girls lacrosse

Marcus Whitman 10, Gananda 8

Emily Thompson scored three goals and Cameron James had two for Whitman.

Melissa Camp scored four goals for Gananda and Shelby Mairoano scored two while Jordan Cunningham and Jenna Ginsberg each scored one.

Canandaigua 9, Palmyra-Macedon 8

Andra Savage scored three goals and Anna Leva and Jamie Walker each scored two for Pal-Mac.

Aldyn Savage had a goal and an assist and Emma Arnold had two assists.

Natalie Gwynn led Canandaigua with two goals and one assist.

Class C2

Red Jacket 5, Caledonia-Mumford 2

Dan Munn pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run, and also hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning that gave Red Jacket the lead for good.

Spencer Jacobs and Munn each had two RBI and Dylan Briggs and Matt Forbes each had one hit.

Class C1

Sodus 2, Canisteo-Greenwood 0

Jared Wren pitched a no-hitter for Sodus and struck out 12.

Daniel Johnson went 2-for-2 with a double, two stolen bases and an RBI.

Avon 15, Lyons 2

Five different players had a hit for the Lions in their season-ending loss.

Class B

Greece Odyssey 6, Newark 3

Leanna Murray singled in a run and Frankie Clements hit a triple and a single for the Reds.

Class C1

Williamson 19, Red Creek  (5)

Autumn Frost and Kiki Hall each drove in four runs for Williamson as Frost hit a home run and doubled among her three hits. Hall had two hits, including a triple.

Gananda 16, Marcus Whitman 0 (5)

Amber LeMay and Aubrey Bagley each drew walks as the only baserunners for Whitman.

Bri Walker hit a triple and home run for Gananda and Caitlin Donnelly hit a triple, a double and drove in two runs. Meghan Deys also had two RBI and Nadine Coleman hit a solo home run.



Mynderse 7, Newark 6

Jake Jones and Nick Hartwell each had a hit and scored two runs to help the Blue Devils hand the Reds their first FL East loss of the season. Jaret Follett struck out three in a complete-game win.

Ben Cowles hit two doubles and drove in three runs for the Reds.

Gananda 8, North Rose-Wolcott 0

Cody Hill pitched five scoreless innings and Zack Valletta allowed one hit in two relief innings for the Blue Panthers.

Cody Welkley hit a double for NR-W and Jorden Brown had a hit and stole a base.

Williamson 7, Sodus 4

Kyle Durst went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Kris Bulman hit a two-run double in the first inning.

Maliq Burton hit two doubles and drove in a run for Sodus and Daniel Johnson had two hits.
