Senior guard leads the Lakers in scoring, which kicks off our update on area athletes playing college sports

It’s her senior season, and Courtney Ameele is making the most of it.

The 6-foot guard and Palmyra-Macedon graduate at SUNY Oswego is leading the Lakers in scoring at 16 points per game, shooting a team-high 30% from 3-point range (30-for-99). The Lakers are 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the SUNYAC but have a chance to right ship starting Friday at SUNY Potsdam, the first of 12 conference games that will close the season.

Ameele also leads the team with 2.9 assists and is second with 26 steals. She’s averaging 4.3 rebounds per game and has scored 20 or more points in four games with a season-high of 27 against Cazenovia.

Ameele and the Lakers play at Geneseo on Jan. 26 and at Brockport on Jan. 27.

Junior swimmer Dane Hoselton (Naples) has helped lead the Grove City College men to a 4-5 conference record this season but most recently had a strong outing at the Calvin Winter Invite. The Daily Messenger’s Swimmer of the Year in 2016 finished sixth in the 200 back (1:55.36) and helped the 200 medley relay team finish sixth (1:33.58) and the 400 free relay team finish 10th (3:11.04). Hoselton and Grove City are back in the pool on Jan. 20 for a non-conference dual with Gannon University … Rayissa Amon (Bloomfield), a junior at Mount Aloysius College, was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Bowler of the week for Nov. 22 for the fourth time this season. At the Wilmington Wildcat Tournament, Amon was named MVP with a 211 average in five traditional games. Amon, the AMCC Bowler of the Year for the past two seasons, leads her team with a 209 traditional average this season and a Baker Fram average of 18.8. Her high game this season is a 225 and the Mounties are 23-13 as they prepare for the Saint Francis Invitational on Jan. 26-28 … Sacred Heart University junior Dominique Newton (Victor) posted a Baker Frame average of 20.7 and rolled strikes at 54.5% to help the Pioneers finish with a 4-2 record at the Northeast Conference Meet on Dec. 3 at Duquesne … Junior guard Mara Sindoni (Canandaigua Academy) has played in 5 games for the William Smith basketball team and is averaging 1.4 points … Sophomore forward Moriah Kunes (Naples) has played in six games for the University of Rochester women’s basketball team and is averaging 2.2 points for the Yellowjackets (11-1) … Freshman guard Jake DiSanto (Victor) has played in 12 games for the SUNY Cortland men’s basketball team (11-2) and is averaging 3 points per game ... Sophomore guard Sydney Jones (Midlakes) has started 8 games and played in 15 for the Daemen College women's basketball team. She's averaging 5.8 points a game and is second on the team with 23 3-point field goals.
