At one point, the Midlakes wrestling team found itself almost 70 points out of first place at the Section 5 Class BBB Championship Tournament this weekend.

The Screaming Eagles didn’t panic. Midlakes came back and won its first Section 5 title in school history on Saturday.

“We put so much time in in the offseason and it paid off for us,” Screaming Eagles coach Steve Howcroft said. “They turned it around and scored and pinned. It was very exciting for the kids to do that.”

The Screaming Eagles finished with 242.5 points to hold off North Rose-Wolcott (234.5) in Class BBB at Genesee Community College. Twelve of Midlakes’ 16 wrestlers placed.

Winning individual sectional titles for Midlakes were Sean Peacock at 113 pounds, Ralph Mateo III (120), Tyler Smith (195), Collin Fox (138) and Conner Fox (152).

Peacock, who received the outstanding wrestler award for the lower weights, pinned Dansville’s Gunnar Maggio in 48 seconds. Mateo defeated teammate Derian Woodard by a 6-4 decision. Smith defeated Penn Yan’s John Martisch by pin in 5:07. Collin Fox defeated Pal-Mac’s Max Lloyd in a 5-0 decision and Conner Fox defeated North Rose’s Mat Gigliotti by a 5-1 decision. Smith’s win sealed the title for Midlakes.

Palmyra-Macedon, which finished third with 215 points, had two wrestlers leave with individual sectional titles. Taylor Jones (132) defeated Newark’s Nolan Avery by a 5-3 decision and his brother Dustin (145) defeated North Rose’s Brian Galuski by an 8-0 decision.

Midlakes’ Jason Charlette took second at 99 pounds losing a 4-3 decision to Wayland-Cohocton’s Tyler Hamsher. Pal-Mac’s Dylan Rifenberg took second in the 126-pound weight class, dropping an 8-4 decision to Jake Nicholson of Waterloo. Marcus Whitman’s Anthony Robarge (160) fell to Wellsville’s Brad Haggerty by a 7-5 decision to take second. Pal-Mac’s Cody Bourgeois lost to Penn Yan’s Joel Pillsbury at 170 pounds in the championship.

Howcroft was named coach of the year.
