The Marion indoor track teams performed well at the Section 5 Class D Championships Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology. The Black Knights boys finished second and the girls finished third.
The LeRoy girls and Williamson boys won Class D titles, while the Wayland-Cohocton girls and Batavia boys won Class C titles.
“With only six guys we outdid ourselves,” Marion coach Bob Goodell said. “I thought they came and ran really hard. The girls finished third and we were missing a couple of athletes tonight to season-ending injuries. They both outdid themselves.”
Marion junior Brandon VanderBrook won sectional titles in the 55-meter dash (6.58), 300 (36.85) and 4x400 relay (3:42.43). He won in the 55 and 300 last year.
“I’m happy, all my work paid off,” VanderBrook said. “I missed some meets, but I still came out well today.”
Teammate Cody Engelsen won the 600 (1:26.71), took second in the 300 (37.77) and also ran on the winning 4x400 relay. Ian Gillens took first in the shot put (45-feet, 9-inches). Engelsen and VanderBrook ran with Tallon Rood and Ethan Koval on the winning relay team.
“It was full of quality people,” Engelsen said. “When your worst guy is running a 57.3 it’s really good. You’re under four minute easily. That’s a lot of other teams’ goals.”
The Marion girls won the 4x200 relay (1:57.77) and junior Mackenzie Sturtz took first in the high jump (5-4). Sturtz’s jump was a personal best and school record.
The Palmyra-Macedon girls took third place in Class C. Senior Marisa Yonker won a sectional title in the 1,500 with a time of 5:12.36. She was also on the winning 4x400 relay team, which set a school record (4:23.38) .
“It feels really good, I’m happy about it,” Yonker said of the 1,500. “I wasn’t expecting it. I know I was ranked first, but you never knew what’s going to happen out there. I was just trying my hardest and coach was pushing me.”
The Red Raiders boys 4x800 relay team won a sectional title with a time of 8:46.08 and Seth Bailey won the high jump and set a new school record (6-1). The boys finished third as a team.
The Newark boys finished eighth in Class C and the girls finished 12th. Jeremy Hassett won a sectional title in the 1,000 (2:39.31).
The Lyons boys finished seventh in Class D and their 4x200 relay team won a sectional title (1:40.91).
