The Vespa (“wasp”) scooter was introduced by the Italian company Piaggio in 1946. Roads in Italy were disastrous after all the bombing that took place in World War II. This sweet vehicle was able to dart around craters and travel on the narrow cart ways found in many hill towns. It quickly became the darling of the Italian people. Now they are popular in congested cities, and the floorboards and shields make it possible to ride in work dress. Best of all, scooters are easy to park almost anywhere. Something to think about, if we ever want to reduce our asphalt footprint and conserve fuel consumption.
