Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts announced that a position is available for a corrections officer. Applications will be accepted at the Sheriff's Office, at 26 Church St., in Lyons, through March 1. A civil service examination will be administered to qualifying candidates April 14.
Applicants must be Wayne County residents and must have either a high school diploma or its equivalent issued by a state education authority. At the time a candidate might be considered for employment, they must be able to meet both physical and medical standards. A corrections officer is legally obligated to be a United States citizen to qualify for the position.
A valid New York driver's license at the time of appointment and maintenance of such license throughout employment will be required. Permanent appointments to the corrections officer position require the successful completion of training which meets the New York State Commission of Corrections standards.
The 2011 starting hourly rate for a trainee is $17.73, with a six-month rate increase to $18.95.
