In February, Culinary Arts students from the Wayne Technical and Career Center traveled to Old Forge, N.Y., to cater a breast cancer awareness event. The benefit snowmobile run event, coordinated by the Pink Ribbon Riders, raised over $73,000.

The mission of the Pink Ribbon Riders is to “promote breast cancer awareness in the motor sports industry, while raising funds for those in need. In combining these two goals, we hope to bring people in the community closer as this disease not only affects those diagnosed but also those who love them.”

Students who traveled to Old Forge were: Dyllen Taber, Marion; Amanda Delles and Nicholas Loomis, Newark; Christine Mouton, North Rose-Wolcott; Courtney Keville, Red Creek; Amanda Lucieer, Sodus; James Agan, Jason Crawford and Danyelle DeLorenzo, Wayne.

Students broke into two teams and competed in a “Chili Cook Off” at the Welcome Party on Friday night. At the Saturday night awards dinner, students prepared barbequed chicken, a smoked brisket, Chicken French, pasta, seafood gumbo, baked beans, salt potatoes, squash, grilled mixed vegetables and salad. The dessert included truffles and brownies.

“I was amazed by the teamwork and creativity shown by these students,” said Dr. John Boronkay, director of Technical, Career and Continuing Education. “They got a standing ovation, and more compliments on their behavior and professional touch than I could count. To see them so excited about service is exhilarating — their home communities will benefit by having them around.”

Students are instructed by Chef Cory Collins. Adult volunteers included: Dr. and Mrs. John Boronkay, Jan Soper, Beth Whitehouse and Chef Ryan VanBuren.

Though the students volunteered from 5 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, they were able to enjoy snowboarding, cross country skiing, sled decorating and live bands.
