  • Letter: Dollars and sense: drop the IRS

  • Now that the Internal Revenue Service has proven that it is willing to play politics, maybe even taking its audit marching orders straight from the White House, it's high time to abolish this unnecessary evil.

A government should tax behavior it doesn't want, and reward behavior it does want. Our government has it backwards! I get a promotion or a raise at work, I pay higher income taxes. There is no incentive to do better. I sit on my butt and refuse to work, I get rent assistance and food stamps.
Repeal the 16th amendment creating the income tax, and replace it with a federal sales tax. Give us our entire paycheck, and let us decide when to pay taxes (i.e., when we make a purchase). The mechanism is already in place in states that have a sales tax. No more 1040 forms, saving receipts, hours and hours spent filing taxes and no more IRS.  Sorry, tax attorneys, you'll need to find another line of work.
Of course, it will never happen. It makes too much sense.
