The Mirror Images Open Juvenile Synchronized Skating team won gold at the Eastern Sectional Synchronized Skating Championship held in Lake Placid, New York January 31 through February 2, 2013. The Open-Juvenile team finished first in the Championship round and beat out 25 other teams from the East coast to claim the division title. The Pre-Juvenile team finished third in their qualifying round and 7th in the championship round out of 28 teams.
The Eastern Sectionals in the largest synchronized skating event during the season where teams must place in the top four in the qualifying round to be able to advance to the final rounds of competition. The top four teams in the championship round qualify for nationals and the State Games of America depending on their level.
The Mirror Images teams participate in 7-8 competitions during the season as well as multiple exhibitions. The Open-Juvenile team started off the season by performing in an exhibition at the Skaneateles Invitational in November; they followed it up with a strong 2nd place finish at the 18th Annual Cape Cod Classic in Bourne, MA held December 8th, 2012; and a 3rd place finish at the 29th Annual Colonial Classic held January 4-6th, 2013 in Lowell, MA.
Recently they finished in first place at the Empire State Winter Games in Lake Placid. Their last competition will be the Reflections Invitational in Hershey, PA and the Spring Skate Festival in Cicero, NY; and they will be skating in exhibitions for the Special Olympics and the Rochester Amerks. The team is made up of 16 members from Rochester and Baldwinsville – Melanie Burnett, Aletheia DeLancey, Kristen Goodrich, Tiffany Kruep, Adya Kumar, Natalie Maliakkal, Christina McAlpin, Jamie Packer, Emily Papa, Sarah Podvin, Lindsey Premo, Payton Simmons-Roy, Shayna Rudy, Catherine Steele, Skylar VanBortel, and Jessica Wittlin. Webster resident, Jessica Stratton, has been the coach and choreographer for the team for the past five years.
The Pre-Juvenile team is also having a very busy season. The team placed 1st at the Skaneateles Invitational, 3rd at the Cape Cod Classic, and 4th at the Colonial Classic. The team will compete at the Reflections Invitational in Hershey, PA; the Port City Invitational and the Cicero Spring Skate Festival as well as local exhibitions through February and March. The seventeen team members include Mary Bedzyk, Hillary Haas, Samantha Haas, LauraAnne Hirschler, Jessica Jasie, Joanna Jin, Eric Liu, Sydney Majka, Taylor Marshall, Helena Mazzerella, Lauren Miller, Madison Stonemetz, Olivia Sutton, Tessa Vasta, Nina Venkatesh, Amelia Willard, and Levia Zhou. The team is also coached by Stratton.
Synchronized skating is one of the most popular disciplines in figure skating. Skaters link up and perform in unison elements to music while creating shapes such as blocks, circles, and lines. The sport allows skaters of all different ages, levels and abilities to participate in local and travel competitions as well as exhibitions year round. The Mirror Images train at the Thomas Creek Ice Arena in Fairport, NY. Aside from skating, team members work hard together on and off the ice to support local charities and enjoy team bonding activities to form strong friendships.
