A fire on Friday night destroyed the Ultimate Plastic Recycling building, located at 889 East Palmyra Port Gibson Road in East Palmyra.

The fire was called in around 8:30 p.m., according to East Palmyra Fire Chief Neil Gates.

“The structure that burned was a quansit type building that was open on both ends,” Gates said. “Housed within this structure were wooden pallets and some mixing equipment that was used to mix the plastic and rubber materials together that are used in the manufacturing process.

“The structure was located in front of the main building and there was one employee inside the main building at the time of the fire.”

There were no injuries to the employee or any fire personnel on scene.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and the estimated damage to the building and contents may be around $100,000, according to Gates.

The East Palmyra Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Port Gibson, Palmyra, Newark, Marbletown, and Marion Fire Departments.

According to New York State Police, the fire apparently started from a grinder overheating. Police added there was no evidence of criminal intent to cause the fire.

The investigation is continuing by Wayne County fire investigators, according to the State Police.
